This past week in 1st grade, we wrapped up our first writing unit! This unit focused on writing small moments. Students worked on touching and telling their stories across their fingers, sketching a picture and writing their words. Some of the writing topics were building a sand castle, meeting Piglet at Disney, and watching fireworks. Students worked hard on their final writing piece to publish because at the end of the week we got to share them with Ms. Picciolas class!
At first when I explained to my students they would be sharing their writing they were a bit nervous until I told them we would be using the Kagan structure Inside Outside Circle. They quickly realized they would only be sharing with a few other students instead of the whole class and the nerves went away quickly! We had my class in one line and Ms. Picciolas in another. Each student got 30 seconds to read their story and show their sketches as their partner was actively listening. When their time was up, they would give a compliment about their story and it was the other students turn to share! When both students have shared, we moved only my class down two spaces. We would do this all together on the count of three so we didn't get mixed up. When everyone had their partner in front of them, the process repeated.
Having students share their hard work was something they were incredibly proud of. As I was walking around listening to students share, I heard compliments like, “I love your sketches!” “That was a great story!” “I really like how you labeled the characters in your picture!”
Our students did an awesome job with sharing their stories and finishing up this unit. This is definitely something we will continue to do here in 1st grade for when students get to share their work!
