Expanding Math Monsters

In second grade math students have been working on place value and understanding the value of each digit in a number. Students have learned how to write numbers in standard form (423), unit form (4 hundreds, 2 tens, 3 ones), expanded form (400+20+3=423), word form (four hundred twenty-three), and picture form (drawing it out on the place value chart). As a fun way to show their learning, they created place value monsters. Each child picked their own 3 digit number and a few challenged themselves by picking a 4 digit number. They then had to show that number in each different way on their monster.

Students had a ton of fun and really showed off their creativity by adding lots of extra details to their monsters like top hats and mustaches!
