Choosing who we want to be

With the beginning of the school year it is always great to set our intentions as a class and begin to create a classroom environment that is open to making mistakes. Mistakes help all of us to grow and learn. My favorite book to read at the start of the year off is always After the Fall by Dan Santat. This book goes through the story of what happened to Humpty Dumpty after his fall. You see him struggling to build up his courage to climb that wall again. He is fearful but by the end he overcomes his fear and climbs to the top. The students always laugh and enjoy the story. As they discussed with a partner why I chose the book so many were able to see that it was to show them that school may have its challenges but with resilience and determination anything is possible for them.

After that discussion we focused on who we wanted to be this  school year. Each student was given two words. They were meant to uncover its meaning and imagine ways that they can be that over the course of the year. My hope is that they will hold onto to those words when things get tough and continue to persevere.
