On Tuesday during reading, I read aloud books about penguins and the children
filled out a graphic organizer on information that they thought were important to
know about penguins. We are going to use this information to write a penguin
book in our writing workshop this week.
Since there was rumor of some serious cold weather heading our way for
the next 2 days, I got in as much penguin activities as I could.
We made a penguin without any help from templates. Usually, I spend a lot
of time making the patterns on card stock for the students to trace and
cut--life changing not to have to do that! We just used basic shapes and
constructed our own penguins.
For math we talked about symmetry and tried to make the other half of a
penguin which was quite challenging.
On Wednesday and Thursday, we WERE going to collect more information
on penguin chicks….but school was cancelled due to extreme cold.
You’re welcome!
I realize that maybe we didn’t bring on the cold weather just because we
decided to study animals in the arctic. It could have been just a coincidence.
But, I’ll certainly warn you when we decide to study the rain forest--so you
can get your umbrellas and galoshes ready!
