Happy Random Acts of Kindness Week!

This week we celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Week! The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation is a non-profit foundation that started this initiative. Each year, there is a week dedicated to bringing awareness to the power of small acts of kindness, and the difference they can make. The foundation believes in the power of spreading kindness throughout schools, communities, and homes and that by teaching how to spread kindness, it can change the way people see and experience the world.

Our class was eager to spend time this week devoted to spreading kindness. We started the week with a read aloud, Kindness Counts by Bryan Smith, which is a picture book that teaches what a random act of kindness is. Then, students brainstormed all the different things they could do at school to spread kindness. We compiled our post-its on a board, and students chose one each morning to focus on doing for that day at school.

As a class we also chose one random act of kindness to accomplish by the end of each day. These included posting a positive note on the lockers of another class, writing a thank you card for a teacher or staff member, giving a random compliment to someone, and randomly choosing one classmate from a bucket and secretly spreading kindness to them in various ways.

Choosing a card to write a nice note on.

I really enjoyed seeing how excited the students were to bring a smile to someone else’s face. They understand that even a small, simple act can make a really big difference. Although the week at school is over, this will be something that we will continue to focus on. We will continue to read stories and have conversations about the power of kindness. I really hope this was just the start of a mindset that acts of kindness go a long way.
