What's on Your Pizza?

What comes to mind of when you think  of “culture”?  Our EL students are learning that culture is a combination of a person’s background, language, food, celebrations and traditions.
To celebrate their uniqueness, students made their own Culture Pizzas.  The pizzas are comprised of 10 slices.  Each slice of pizza has a different category that can make up one’s culture. The categories include favorite Movie, Music, Sports, Food, and Book; Family, Friends, Languages spoken and Flag that represents their family’s native or ancestral background. Then students were allowed to either draw or write a representation in each category.

This lesson is important for several reasons. First, it’s important to understand that culture is not just a person’s language or country of origin. Knowing that culture encompasses ethnicity, geography, language, traditions and experiences helps teachers understand how culture affects students’ perceptions, self-esteem, values, behavior at home and at school.
This lesson is also important because it allows students to learn about themselves and their classmates. After students complete their project, they will share the “ingredients” on their pizzas. They will get to see what they have in common as well as gain appreciation for their differences.
