Do you want to build a snowman? – Oops! I mean a
birdhouse! In second grade it is
definitely a birdhouse for our first Real World Experience in our Measurement
and Data unit in math. This year we decided to build a virtual birdhouse on
iPads with the help of our LRC director, Mrs. Sayre, and an App called 3D
Sketch Studio. This App is perfect to bring STEM (science,
technology, engineering, and math) into our curriculum. It allows the
students more flexibility in terms of creativity, exploration, and collaboration
than did our former cut and paste birdhouse project.
The students had the ability to manipulate shapes by playing
with dimensions and colors. They were able to use cubes, rectangular prisms,
and square pyramids; and to stack and stretch them into original creations. Also,
they were able to measure their birdhouses in centimeters. This data we will
use to tally and transfer to both a line plot and a bar graph. Finally, we will
write an explanatory essay about the math we used in designing and recording
measurements for our birdhouses.
Benjamin Franklin once said, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me
and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” The students were engaged and learning
about measurement and data; and will be able to explain their knowledge as they
write about this experience.
