Second Step

Second Step is a social emotional curriculum that teaches many valuable life skills.  I go into the classes and teach the weekly lessons to many of the classes at Goodrich.  It covers topics such as emotion management, problem solving, and anger management.  These are skills that all kids work on throughout the years all the way from Kindergarten to 6th grade.  Below some 5th grade students have written what they have learned in second step and why it is important to them.

"In second step we learn how to solve lots of different problems in different ways. First we have to calm down, if the situation made you mad. Then we have to figure out the problem. After we figured out the problem we had to think of a couple solutions to solve the problem. For each solution you need to ask yourself,  Is it safe? How might people feel about it? Is it fair? Will it work? Once you have figured out what solution you want to use. Use it. If it does not work pick another solution.

This is a very important lesson because you don’t want to do the wrong thing in the wrong situation. You want to know how to cool down and some of those ways are to count to 10 and or you could breath in and out a couple of time till you calm down. This is a good lesson to learn because you don't want to take a guess on what to do in an important situation. You want to do the right thing and you don’t want to regret your decision. So we think this is very important lesson to learn so that everyone can do the right thing in a difficult decision. " -Georgia, Rylee, Abby, Tiffany
