Book Overview

In Miss Bator’s class each group has started a different novel study in guided reading. My group is reading Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’ Dell. To learn a little bit more about the book we did a book overview. A book overview is when you find out information about the book before you read it. We found out who the author is and what year the book was published. After that we decided if the book is fiction or nonfiction, we all decided that it was fiction because it is a longer book and longer books are usually fiction. Then we flipped to a random page in the book, read it, and wrote a brief summary about it. We also explored the back cover and decided if we would want to read the book or not based on what it said. After all of that we discussed our answers with one another.

I really enjoyed doing a book overview because it helped me understand the book better and it is pretty fun too. A book overview is a great way to find out just the right amount of information about a book to see if it is something that you would want to read or not. It is a fun and easy thing to do just incase you either can’t decide on two books or you don’t know what book to read. I think that everyone should try to do a book overview!

I am really looking forward to reading Island of the Blue Dolphins and discussing it with my group members!
