A Song Just For Us

The students in my room in grades 1-3 have come up with lyrics to create their very own class song. This is something I love to do at the beginning of the year because it is a great class-building activity.

First, I ask them to think of their favorite subject in school and draw a picture of it. This helps them to visualize why they like that particular time of the day. From there we think of a sentence about why we chose that picture and subject. We then take a familiar song, to the students, and change the lyrics one sentence at a time. We sing it altogether when it is completed and add movements, that match the words, to help us memorize it.

Each student is left knowing that the song could not have been completed without their idea and that when we work together as a class we are left with an awesome product. This helps to make us unique from the rest of the classes in the building and bond as our very own learning community.
