Pi Day!

Happy Pi Day! Pi (π) is a mathematical constant that represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. No matter the size of the circle, this ratio is always the same — approximately 3.14159Today our 5th graders explored this fascinating concept!

One of our activities included a hands-on experiment known as Buffon's Needle. This classic probability experiment allowed students to explore the concept of Pi by dropping needles on a lined surface and calculating their probability of crossing the lines. If you divide the total number of needles dropped by the number of line-crossings, you may notice that the number starts to hover just above 3, as you drop more needles and test them. Yes, you guessed it. If you keep dropping needles and making this simple calculation, that number will start to approximate pi. It was a fantastic way to connect math with real-world applications and see how pi appears in unexpected ways!

Students also practiced calculating the circumference of circles using pi (π ≈ 3.14). We measured various circular objects in the classroom, from jar lids to basketballs, and used the formula C = πd to calculate their circumferences. This activity helped reinforce both measurement skills and the importance of pi in geometry.
