The first few weeks of the school year are really focused on building a positive classroom community. During the school year, many kids spend more time at school than they do at home. I want this space to be a place where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and that they belong.
As a class we read the book Our Class is a Family. Students at first were confused by this because we are not related. We had a discussion about what it means to be a family. Families support each other, care for each other, and work together as one team. Those are all things we will strive to do in second grade.
For a final activity, we all made a friendship bracelet to show that we are all a part of the same classroom family. They had to pick elements of being a part of our second grade family to add to their bracelet. Some examples students thought of was adding a 2 for second grade or a B for Brandner.
They can wear their bracelets as a reminder that they all belong in our classroom!
