Narrative Writing and Fire Safety!

The beginning of the year brings about a time for routine, procedures and PRACTICE! In first grade, we are building our stamina as we practice routines for learning, navigating around the building and managing our time as well. The key to building these routines is practice.

There is another area that requires practice and procedural directions and that is in the area of safety. We practice safety drills on repeat in the beginning of the year so that we know what to do in case of an emergency.

We have been working on knowing what to do in case of a fire emergency. We have practiced with our own class, we have answered questions, and we have practiced as a whole school.

Today we had a whole school fire drill. We were given the opportunity to practice as a whole school to ensure that we have a seamless transition out of the building as quickly and safely as possible.

First grade even connected this important learning to writing. Our first writing unit in first grade is narrative writing and we write about one time and one thing we did. As a class, to kick off this unit, we wrote about a shared experience. The Goodrich school fire drill. We talked about the experience part by part and wrote it over 3 pages. The beginning, middle and end. We started with drawing detailed pictures that could almost tell a story on its own. Then we moved to writing a sentence to explain what happened first, next and last. The first graders did an amazing job connecting their writing to this real world experience. I think it is safe to say that we are prepared in case of a fire and are ready to practice when necessary!
