Service Learning is LIFE CHANGING!

This week, our 5th grade students experienced a day that they will hopefully remember for years to come.  We took a trip to Feed My Starving Children as part of our service learning project.  WOW, did this have an impact on the students, parent chaperones, and staff.  It is truly remarkable how a group of people, when tasked with the same goal, can achieve so much. In just over an hour's time, our group packed enough food equivalent to thousands of meals for those in need.  My students make me proud every single day, and this was certainly no exception.

Rather than stay behind and have the volunteers at Feed My Starving Children share with us the data of our accomplishments, the students went back to school and did the MATH to figure it out themselves.  The learning part of the service learning project was challenging to say the least, but there was extra motivation behind the math.  The students figured out the exact amount of bags packed and meals provided from our service.

Boxes Packed: 95

Bags per Box: 36

Total Bags: 3,420

Meals provided: 20, 520

They didn't stop there!  Using their newly acquired division skills, the 5th graders figured out about how many children could be fed for an entire year with the food that we packed.  Approximately 56 children will be provided with meals everyday for an entire year thanks to the 5th graders and the parent volunteers.  I am so proud of the service learning that my students participated in as well as their perseverance in the work required to figure out our accomplishments!
