Gratitude Through Letters to Veterans

As a teacher, one of the most rewarding aspects is helping students develop empathy and gratitude towards others and the world around them. One way that fourth graders learn empathy and gratitude is by writing letters to veterans in honor of Veteran's Day, which takes place on November 11th. Veteran's Day is a time to honor and appreciate the men and women who have selflessly served our country. Writing letters of gratitude gives students a chance to learn about the sacrifices veterans have made and the service they have provided. This can help students gain a deeper appreciation for the importance of their contributions and sacrifices.

Students' ideas for showing veterans their gratitude.

Before writing their letters, students learned about the history of Veteran's Day, as well as talked about veterans they know and put ourselves in their shoes. Then, as a class, we brainstormed strengths and traits those serving our country hold.

The Woodridge VFW, JANO (Janes Avenue Neighborhood Outreach), and our school district work together to distribute the letters written by students. Their letters will be distributed to veterans in our area, as well as active-duty members of the military.

"Having spent a year deployed in Thailand during Vietnam, I know these types of letters and packages are extremely important," said Bob Reichert, quartermaster, Woodridge VFW Post 1578. "Personal letters of appreciation are often some of the most memorable and positive items that our military service members receive." - Woodridge E-News
