Three-Step Interview

Yesterday teachers started the week with Institute Day, where we began preparing for the second half of the year. I gathered lots of ideas throughout the day, and I am now ready to take on the remaining five months with a refreshed mindset!

One idea that was introduced to us was by Dr. Scaletta. He shared a new Kagan structure  called, Three-Step Interview. During this structure the participants are interviewers, interviewees, and reporters. The participants form pairs within their team. The leader shares a topic to be discussed, then each participant takes turns interviewing their partner (taking notes if necessary). After the interview process is completed, the partnerships share their partner's thoughts.

Today I did this with my math class. We started with a fun topic: What you did over break?

Some fun things the students did over break were...

  • traveling to London
  • traveling to Florida
  • Late night bowling
  • Playing video games
  • Spending the day in the city

Then I made it more math related. The topic was Algebra: What do you know and remember?

When the students finished the interview process, I had them share out their partner's thoughts through a Round Robin format. As they shared ideas they added them to a big sheet of paper that I called their "memory box." When the groups were finished, we discussed everything in memory boxes. It was  good way to refresh the students' understanding of what we were working on before break.
