Our current Science unit in 6th grade is all about the Geology of Mars. Students started the unit as planetary geologists, using what we know about the Earth and needs for human survival to determine if any other planet in our solar system has been or could be habitable.
Students studied the hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere, and biosphere of the four rocky planets. Through this research, we came to the conclusion that Mars is the most similar to Earth and the best option for possible habitability.
Now, students have started working as planetary architects on a mission to build a base that astronauts could live in for 12 months on Mars. Students are researching the environment of Mars in order to plan for what astronauts will need to survive.
Our Learning Resource Specialist, Mr. Lafferty, is supporting us in this unit and teaching 6th graders how to use Tinkercad, an online 3D modeling program. Students will construct their Mars Base using this program, applying what they have learned.
