In our current unit of math, students are learning about hundreds, tens, and ones. We want them to understand place value so when they go to adding and subtracting within 1,000 they are ready to go! One thing we have been doing to help them understand place value is learning about the different forms (ways) to write a number. This could be in expanded form where they are adding by their place value, word form where they are writing out the number, unit form where they write the number by telling how much of each unit there is, and drawing it on a place value chart. All of these ways help our learners better understand numbers.
Now that they have learned all the different forms, it is time to practice! One way we practiced was by doing a Quiz, Quiz, Trade structure. Each student had a different card quizzing them about math. Some of these cards had questions like “What is the expanded form of 536?” and “What number is 2 hundreds, 3 tens and 6 ones?” Students were told that they were able to bring their whiteboard around with them, so if they wanted to draw a picture or write it out to better understand, they could! If their partner doesn’t know the answer, students are taught how to coach one another to get to the right answer. This helps build our math community!
