The Great Chicago Fire's Impact on Industrialization

During the last six weeks, fourth graders have been exploring the essential question, "Did industrialization make life better for everyone in Illinois?", during social studies. Students learned the changes that were made in manufacturing during the 1800s, as well as the ways it grew in Illinois and Chicago as a result of innovations such as the assembly line.

This past week, students have been exploring the impact the Chicago Fire of 1871 had on Illinois and cities across the country. Fourth graders were split into three groups, each group being assigned certain aspects of the event to research.

After completing their informational posters, the posters were placed around our classroom. Each group spent 3-5 minutes at each poster, completing a tree map for the what, when, why, how and impact the fire had on Chicago, as well as the changes that were made as a result (skyscrapers, cement sidewalks, distance between buildings, using stone and brick for buildings instead of wood).
