Martin Luther King Jr….not just another day off

On Tuesday, the first graders discovered the reasons why we had
Monday off.  It wasn’t just to sleep in and stay in our pjs all day!

The day started off by asking:  Why did we have Monday off?
Not many students knew the answer. Some knew it was because it
was someone's birthday and that it was a holiday.

So we started by reading the Scholastic News  magazine titled A Hero’s Story.
The students learned about how he was instrumental in changing  the laws
of segregation so that all people could ride the bus, drink out of the same
fountain, and go to the same schools.

We decided MLK, Jr. demonstrated all of the traits of a responsible
citizen--which we just happen to be studying in Social
Studies… We brainstormed adjectives to describe the character traits
of MLK, Jr.

This is what we came up with:

We made a peace plate to help us remember that MLK, Jr. got his
message across in a peaceful way. He gave motivating speeches
and held marches--all promoting change in a peaceful way.  We made
a peace sign out of masking tape on a paper plate. Then we wrote
those descriptive words for MLK, Jr. all over the plate.

Then we used watercolor paint (sorry custodial staff….) and did a wash of
bright colors all over the peace sign.

To continue to honor the idea of peace and getting along, we made our
table names out of peace signs.  The students at each table discussed
the ways they were alike and different and designed their own part of the
peace sign.  Then they glued it together to make the peace sign as a
reminder that even though we are all different, we can learn to come
together to work and play peacefully.

Sometimes we need a day off to remind ourselves to solve problems in
a peaceful way and to accept everybody’s uniqueness.
Peace out!
