Bringing History to Life

As part of our nonfiction reading unit, fourth graders have been learning about the events leading up to the American Revolution. We have been investigating and taking notes on why the colonists decided to break away from British rule. We have looked to both primary and secondary documents including books, articles, speeches, and pictures. We have also taken on the roles of loyalists and patriots while thinking about the events that led to revolution. With all this knowledge, we needed to figure out a way to share all that we’ve learned.

What better way to bring history to life than to actually bring history to life. Students have been split into 6 groups and are responsible for creating a short skit that explains their event. Students have to create characters, a script, and props. They also must include both sides of the story of their event. As we have learned through our research, history always has two sides. Students have been hard at work writing their scripts and designing their props. Next week we will pair up with Miss Gullatte’s class to get some peer feedback before we perform our skits the following week for third grade. I can’t wait to see the students’ final products!
