1st Grade Service Learning Project

1st graders have been busy, busy, busy working on their service learning project for the Naperville Area Humane Society. The NAHS is a volunteer-based, animal shelter for dog and cat adoption and foster care.

Over the course of several weeks, our dog-loving 1st graders have been working on home-made (school-made?) goodie bags.  They turned plain white bags into masterpieces with the help of Miss Jacobs in Art class. When a dog is adopted, families will receive a goodie bag to take home with them.

Students enjoyed making toys to donate to the shelter. They decorated socks using fabric markers and stuffed them with empty plastic water bottles.

A representative from NAHS came to Goodrich today and brought along a little friend, Boo.  We don't know what breed Boo is, but we do know that she is an adorable, well behaved pup and available for adoption.
Boo is looking for a new home!

While they did have fun making these gifts for dogs and their newly adopted families, they learned about the importance of giving to the community. Children don’t always realize they can make an impact in the lives of others. Service learning projects like this gives students the chance to find a need in the community, and put their talents to serving others.

Contact the Naperville Area Humane Society if interested in adopting Boo or to find out more about their services.   https://www.naperhumane.org/
