The Importance of Movement Breaks

Movement breaks, or "brain breaks", are brief intervals that enable all students to move their bodies and help students become engaged learners in physical ways (Roberts, 2013). "Brain breaks" are used to help their brains shift focus. Frequent breaks throughout the school day actually enable students to focus on the next learning activity. When students are moving there is increased blood flow to the brain, which helps with staying alert and focus. However, brain breaks do not always need to be active. For students who may become overstimulated from physical activity, meditation exercises, drawing, and stretching can also give an overwhelmed brain time to recharge.
