Second Graders Become Published Authors

Second graders are wrapping up their non-fiction writing unit and what better way to celebrate than becoming published authors and getting our very own book published! One form of non-fiction writing we learned about is "how-to" writing. Students were all asked to bring in a recipe from home that would be used to create a class book. They could pick any recipe that they have either made or helped to make. I encouraged them think if they had any favorite family recipes that have been passed down or any special recipes that represent their culture. One of my favorite parts of this project is seeing the students pride in sharing about a food from their culture. This project also brought out huge growth in my students writing. Students are more willing and able to really push themselves to extend past their writing level when they are excited about what they are doing. Their final project were shipped to scholastic today and we should be receiving our published book in a few weeks!
