Building Grit Through Recorder Instruction

Students in fourth and fifth grade have just started their recorder unit. During this unit they work on several skills from reading rhythms, reading notes, understanding musical symbols and markings, as well as fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. This year we are adding an emphasis on grit.

To learn an instrument is no easy feet. Students learn that they must practice each skill carefully and repetitively in order to progress through the recorder karate program. They find out that it takes much perseverance and drive to obtain their black belt status. Sometimes one of the hardest lessons to learn is that you will not be great at something right away, but if you work harder you will get the results you want.

This is one of my favorite units to teach because I get to see the students light up when they finally get it and their hard work has paid off. They are able to use the classroom feedback to better themselves and go back and try again. We are continually working to maintain a growth mindset throughout and realize that we CAN DO IT!
