Breakout Boxes in First Grade!

Last week we had the opportunity to really display our measurement and TEAMWORK skills! We traveled down to the LRC to do a class breakout box with Mrs. Sayre. The first grade team met with Mrs. Sayre before hand and told her what the first grade students are expected to be able to do in our measurement unit. With that information, Mrs. Sayre got to work on creating a breakout box that matched our unit. A breakout box is a set of puzzles or riddles that the students together as a team need to figure out in order to crack the code. Sometimes the code is a word, a set of numbers, and sometimes you need a key to open the box.

When the students started, there were several items that they needed to get an accurate measurement on in order to figure out the code. The students had their heads together working so hard to help each other and make sure they could crack the code.
There were times some teams felt like giving up, but a few words of encouragement from each other was all it took to persevere on!

Finally, all teams were able to complete the task and break open the box. Inside, was a coupon for a Class Dojo prize!! The class was thrilled to get the coupon, but their teamwork was what was the real prize. I enjoyed watching each and every student make a positive impact on his or her group in order to figure out what they needed to in order to open the breakout box. I hope to do another breakout before the year is over! Huge thank you to Mrs. Sayre for her hard work and imagination to make such a fun breakout box for first grade!
