Getting Creative with Science Vocabulary

If I asked you to close your eyes and imagine a structure, what would you visualize? Would you visualize a building or a bridge? Would you imagine an organization chart? Would you imagine a part of of a plant or an animal (ie, a beak or a long neck on a turtle)?
1st grade “scientists” are learning new vocabulary related to Plant and Animal Defenses. To help them remember the definitions and be able to use them within the context of science, students are using the process of visualizing and illustrating.

After learning and discussing  the new vocabulary, students draw a picture that represents each word. Drawing pictures deepens understanding and improves recall of the vocabulary.

Students enjoy the opportunity to be creative and have fun showing us what they drew.
