We may be in September now, but the
summer season is still in full swing, and man is it hot out there! I always like to start the year with some
team building and cooperative games. But
once that is finished I’m ready to get the kids outside for P.E. However… this heat isn’t always fun to run
around in, or for my sake, to be out there all day long. So… what do I do…
a Frisbee unit! There are many ways you can get some great exercise playing Frisbee, but there are always ways to play Frisbee-type games without running around the field and overexerting ourselves in the heat.

Today we are started some Kan
Jam! This is a backyard game that many
people play at BBQ's or picnics across the country with family and
friends. As I do in many games, I modified the rules a
little bit from the original game to work better in our 25-minute P.E.
classes. But essentially it is a 2 v 2
game that requires throwing accuracy, teamwork, concentration, and just plain
old fun!
We play for a certain amount of time
and the rotate to our next opponent.
Here are Mrs. Weber’s rules on earning
points:
•
DINGER = 1 point: Redirected
Hit (Deflector redirects thrown disc to hit any part of the goal.)
•
DEUCE = 2 points: Direct
Hit (Thrower hits the goal without help from their partner.)
•
BUCKET = 3 points: Slam
Dunk (Deflector redirects the disc and it lands inside the goal, either through
the top or through the hole in the front.)
•
HOLE
= 4 points: Disc
goes through hole in the front without any help from partner.
Each year
the kids look forward to playing Kan Jam and they enjoy the friendly competition
with their classmates. Once it’s over,
they are excited to move on to Frisbee-Golf (or Frolf as I prefer to call
it courtesy of George Costanza), but they are always left wanting another day or
two of Kan Jam!
