This week in kindergarten
, we started learning about how-to stories. The students are learning to share about things that they are experts on. To kick off this unit, we did an activity where the students practiced giving step-by-step instructions to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They quickly figured out that the directions that they gave had to be very clear or else they would see their teacher do some silly things. For example, when they said to open the bag, they needed to say how to open the bag or else someone might think to just rip the bag open.
We will utilize this activity when we are beginning our how-to stories and making sure they are using clear step by step instructions. As a class, we have started a story on how to build a snowman. The students are working on recognizing the steps they take to do so and adding details in so that they would be able to teach someone else. We will continue to build on this in the coming weeks.
