In kindergarten, we have been investigating about what a plant needs in order to grow and survive. Our big focus question at the moment is whether or not plants need water to survive. We have explored this question through a variety of activities and avenues such as reading literature, comparing and contrasting habitats, and actually getting the opportunity to grow items within our classroom. We have had two experiments where we have tested to see what a plant needs to grow.
With one, we had two different cups holding garlic cloves, one with water and one without. Over the last couple of weeks we have observed the growth that each cup made. The one that had water added made the most growth and the students were excited to see the beginnings of green that started to poke out. The students also were able to plant grass seeds with their 6th grade buddies in order to make a plant buddy. The students have been able to see fast growth of the grass with their plant buddy as we have worked to take care of our plants.
