All About Punctuation!

Here in first grade, we continuously work towards beginning our sentences with capital letters and ending it with punctuation. We decided that the first day after spring break we would do some punctuation practice to get us back into the writing groove before beginning our final writing unit. Thinking of ways to get them grooving and moving, we decided to have students “write the room”.

Students were given a piece of paper with room for sentences and a tiny picture next to each box. The pictures matched a certain card around the room. With a partner, students were given 2 minutes to start at a card and write the sentence on their paper and then add their punctuation to the end. They had to decide whether they thought it would be a question mark, a period, or an exclamation mark. When students were done and waiting for the timer to signal it was time to rotate, they would read the sentences and share with their partner what they put at the end. Students had a lot of fun rotating around the room and writing on their clipboards.
