In music class we learn many things about playing, writing, creating and listening to music. One of my favorite ways to play and create is through folk dances. We have been trying out a lot of different dances from all over the world and learning a lot about other cultures and having a great time.
Last week, 2nd grade was hard at work learning a circle dance from Denmark called, "Seven Jumps." Each time the song repeats a new movement is added all the way until we get to seven. The kids love that each time the music adds a part they have to use their balance and the timing is never the same. The surprise makes it fun and gets lots of laughs and smiles from the kids. They work together, helping each other remember what part comes next, and they are so excited when everyone gets it right.
This week, kindergarten has been working on a partner dance from Russia. "Sasha" is a fun dance that gets them up and moving and working with lots of different partners and not just their best friends. At Goodrich, we teach them early on that any and everyone can be their partner and we can all learn from one another to be successful.
Here are some video clips of these two great dances!
