Read Alouds for Everyone

Read-alouds are a critical part of most primary classrooms, as well as a nighttime routine in many households with your children. As children get older, parents and teachers often push off reading aloud, knowing students are capable of reading longer books on their own.

But reading aloud to our students (and you to your children) is SO important. During read-alouds, we share the emotion, excitement, suspense, and the enjoyment of a new story. Read-alouds have a profound impact on the success of a student. During read-alouds, students internalize language and structures that they can apply to their own reading. Follow-up discussions help students develop background knowledge, build vocabulary and connect concepts. Building vocabulary is a critical way for students to become better readers.

Finding interesting ways to engage students during read-alouds can be a challenge. This year, in order to keep students interested, students have been participating in these daily read alouds by each reading one chapter to the class. Completely voluntary, several students have chosen to participate. Alternating between the teacher reading and the students reading, the class is able to maintain the understanding of the story while also enjoying listening to their classmates read.
