In 5th grade, we are working through a Fantasy Book Club Reading Unit and it is the BEST unit of the year! We started out by focusing on the type of fantasy world we are living in within our stories, learned that information in fantasy texts unravels rapidly, and also identified that we are learning a lot about the world right alongside the main character.
The awesome thing about fantasy texts is that we are able to see the character's problems as DRAGONS that they are facing and relate those problems to our lives. We look at struggles the characters are facing, character flaws, and changes in characters' traits and relationships as learning experiences for us as readers.
The students found a lot of DRAGONS in their book club books and we used these dragons to develop themes and life lessons that our authors are teaching us.
Reading these fantasy texts will make us stronger readers in every way!
