Perspective

Our social emotional curriculum Positivity Project allows students to focus on one character strength per week throughout the school year. Our word this week is: Perspective. Perspective is a really hard concept for young students to understand. The idea that other people have different viewpoints and see things differently than them is confusing at this age. To try to grasp this concept, we did a few activities in class to help see things from a different point of view.

First, we looked at images like this:

Next, each student got a piece of paper and only one marker. They drew a picture of their choice on the paper with just one color. Students left their paper at their seat, and we rotated around the room looking at other people's pictures and wrote our guess down of what their drawing was. The goal was for students to see that everyone views things differently, and at first glance, you may have seen something different than what the artist intended!

Here are some examples:

Guesses: Earth, planet
Answer: Earth

Guesses: duck
Answer: bird

Guesses: sheep, dog, bug
Answer: dog (upside down 😂)

After students walked around and guessed what other pictures were, we all shared what our picture was actually supposed to be. Students loved seeing if their guess was correct, or if they had viewed it in a different way! It ended up being a great lesson about perspective, as students realized that even if they didn't guess what the artist had intended it to be, they still were able to see a different image in the drawing. Awesome job 2nd graders!
