During the school year I encourage students who take music lessons outside of the school day to perform for their class if they feel comfortable. Many students here take piano lessons, guitar lessons, string lessons and dance lessons and I love to see their progress and success. We schedule their performance in advance and figure out what they need to bring or send to me ahead of time so they are prepared. The day of their performance they bring in their instrument, piano book or I cue up the backing track for their dance and away we go. It is such a rewarding experience for them to share their talents with the others in their class who may have never seen/heard them perform before.
The students in their seats learn etiquette on how to be a good audience member and how to support their peers, as well. We talk about how we should not be fidgeting, or whispering or moving around. We use three golden rules...Be Silent, Be Still and Be Supportive. When the performance is finished we provide compliments to the performer which helps to build community and kindness in the class. It is genuinely heart-warming to hear the wonderful things they say to each other. Below are some great video examples of some students who have performed this year, so far.
