Phonics Fun

We have been working to master our new phonics program. Each day we review our previous learning, receive new instruction, complete dictation, and practice to transfer the skills. Today's phonics began with a review from Friday. A few students helped to be teacher as we review the letter names (uppercase and lowercase), letter sounds, and slide. A slide is a consonant and vowel that are read blended together.

We then learned the new consonant Gg. We brainstormed words that began with the g sound such as goat, great, grapes, garbage, gobble, and many more. Next, we learned the difference between the uppercase G and the lowercase g. Students spent some time practicing the proper letter formation of Gg as well as practicing the slide ga.

Then, we got ready for our favorite part of the lesson, dictation. Each student went to stand in front of their own whiteboard. First, I 'threw' a letter at the students while they 'caught' it with our very important hand motions. Then, students 'threw' it back while I 'caught' it. We each 'throw' the letter, sound, or slide that will be written twice. Next, students turn to write the given letter (or slide). Lastly, I can monitor and compliment all the fantastic work while watching over the students shoulders.

Finally, the students transfer the skills by completing a variety of games or practice activities. Today, we reviewed the letter names, letter sounds, and slides on a miniature transfer card at our tables. Each student got a chance to be the teacher which allowed for a lot of practice. We also applied the skills by coming up with a word that began with the letters we have learned so far. We got to draw a picture of the word and practice writing the beginning letter below the picture.
