This month in class we have been focused on celebrating black history month! We have been looking at the many amazing heroes who have stood up to injustice.
We started by looking at Martin Luther King Jr. We watched apart of his infamous
I Have a Dream speech. The students were are all engrossed in his speech and were eager to
ask questions and talk about the importance of this moment. After we watched we each created a
piece for our I Have a Dream poster. The students each took great pride in their work!
They also had fun figuring out how to put their pieces together.

This month we have also talked about Langston Hughes during our poetry unit in reading,
Maya Angelou, and recently Nelson Mandela. For Nelson Mandela we read up on him and
learned about how much influence he had. The students created drawings that represented
significant parts of his life.

Through this experience of looking at important figures in African American culture
students were able to see past just knowing about slavery and be able to see more heroes
that are not generally taught. We were able to talk about what this people have done and how they
have possible influenced our lives or others today.
