Student-Led Conferences

In 6th grade we have students lead their own conferences. This is critical because it allows students to take accountability for their learning. Throughout this process, students are reflecting on the first trimester and creating next steps for the upcoming trimester.

This year, we decided to have students create their portfolio digitally. This allows students to navigate and practice using important digital skills. Students are asked to include visuals to demonstrate their learning in specific subjects.

Students are also practicing social skills through this process such as introducing guardians to their teacher. Students also practice with peers prior to sharing this information at conferences so they are confident and can successfully cover all the material.

My favorite slide of this conference portfolio that students will complete is creating a goal. In 6th grade we have heavily focused on goal setting because we understand this is a critical skill used throughout your entire life. At the end of the conference, the students will share a few goals they want to accomplish by the end of the school year. Then, they will carry out a discussion with their guardians on how they can also assist the students in accomplishing this goal.

The students are in the beginning stages of preparing for these conferences but I am already incredibly impressed. I am so excited to see the final product and watch these 6th grades radiate confidence at their conference!
