February Kindness Challenge

Last week, we were made aware of an SEL/Kindness Challenge that will be going on throughout the month of February in the district. A calendar was sent out with suggested SEL activities to do each day with your students. It is an optional activity, but I thought it would be really beneficial for my Kindergartners to participate in, so we started the challenge yesterday on February 1st!

Some of the activities listed are: leave a positive note for each student on their desk, play a team builder game with your class, read a book about perseverance, have students write a thank you letter to a staff member, make positive phone calls home, share things about yourself with the students, etc. For the first day of the challenge, we each wrote a goal to have for the month of February. We sat down together on the carpet and discussed what a goal was, and how you could figure out what type of goal is best for you. This goal is one that needs to be achieved by the end of February, so as a class we brainstormed some ideas!

Each student then picked a goal, and thought of steps to help them make sure they're staying accountable and working towards that goal.

Today’s challenge for the day was to share your favorite book with your students. While I have many favorite books, I have already shared a lot of them with my students. The one I read today is called I’m Afraid Your Teddy is in Trouble Today by: Jancee Dunn. They loved it!
While this was fun, I also decided to take this one step further. We invited our 6th grade buddies to come into the classroom and read stories to my students as well! As you can see, they really loved it!

Although we still have many days left in February, I would say the February Kindness Challenge is off to a great start!
