Today in Kindergarten we celebrated the 100th day of school! It was so fun to see the kids carry the idea of 100 across the entire curriculum! As teachers, it is important for us to connect the concepts across the curriculum and this was the perfect opportunity to do so!
We started our day with different math centers where the kids worked with 100 in unique ways. One of the centers focused on the use of the hundreds chart where the kids had to complete a puzzle of the hundreds chart. This solidifies a true sense of place value when the kids are able to say things like, "I know this piece goes here because I see 2 tens above it, so 3 tens would go below it." and "I know that all of the numbers on the end, have a 0 in the ones place."
Another station focused on counting to 100. The students worked in pairs, picked a card and counted to that number together. One of the standards that students are expected to meet by the end of kindergarten is counting to 100 without support.
We also took the number 100 and applied it in our writing. We brainstormed some ideas about what we would do when we are 100 years old. It was funny to see the kids' sense of time. A lot of the kids said that they would be in college, or talked about their profession at 100 years old.
Also on the 100th day, we used our imagination to create a picture out of the number 100. The students were able to create anything they wanted. Along with this creativity, we put our muscles to work by completing 100 exercises throughout the day. We started with jumping jacks, moved on to arm circles, and even did push ups!
One of the coolest parts of the day was during purposeful play. This is when I really got to see the kids work together and have some fun on their own! I saw kids working on a 100 piece puzzle, some creating a tower with 100 cups, writing 100 words, and others building with 100 Legos. The kids worked well with one another and loved the opportunity to freely play with their friends.
100th day was a success this year in Kindergarten!
