Working with our 5th grade buddies is not only
the highlight of Tuesday in first grade; it’s the highlight of the ENTIRE week! First graders love
having the opportunity to work with an older student in the building. This also
really builds school wide relationships as the students see each other at lunch
and recess. I have heard so many of my students mention a 5th grader
tying a 1st grader’s shoe, or walking a student in to the office
after falling down, and the list goes on and on!
This week we had the 1st and 5th graders decorate a green triangle any way they wanted. Some added “confetti” while others created all sorts of shapes to cover their triangle. Halfway through the activity I shared what the final product would look like. We were going to place each decorated triangle together to make one large holiday tree. Once they say the final product, we talked about how each student designed the triangle in a different way. Each student had his or her own way of making the triangle unique and special. That is what we love about our classes, our buddies, and our school! Each one of us is a puzzle piece to the entire puzzle. Without each one of us, our puzzle will be incomplete.
We placed this display in front of the gym doors. This way, not only will 1st and 5th graders pass this display, but everyone in the school!
