Together We Can Do So Much!

And that is just what the Goodrich School community did this past month.

During the month of May, Goodrich students came together as a community to collect for Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that affects the lungs. This fundraising opportunity began toward the beginning of the school year when one of our Student Council members brought the idea to Mrs. Schneider and myself during a Student Council meeting. Here is how the journey played out.

Back toward the beginning of the year during a Student Council meeting, we were talking about how we could give back in some way to our community or beyond. In the past we have raised funds for cancer, mosquito netting, and animal shelters. One of our students said that two of our students at Goodrich School had Cystic Fibrosis and maybe collecting for it would be a good fundraiser for this year.  Many of our members know Michael and Dylan and thought the idea of helping out someone in our own school community was a great idea.

As we came into the second half of the year the Student Council began working on the logistics of the fundraiser.  They needed to talk to Michael and Dylan's mom, figure out dates of the fundraiser so it wouldn't get in the way of other things that were going on, and work out a way they could reward the top classes in K-2 and 3-6.  A lot of time and effort went into the planning.

The week before the fundraising began, our members went to every classroom to explain what Cystic Fibrosis was and play the video that Mrs. DeFalco made this past year about the boys and their fight with this terrible disease.

From there it was up to our students.  They were given two weeks to bring in their money...anything was accepted, from the change in their piggy banks to the dollars they earned for chores. We held a used book sale in the library. The PTO gave money. We even heard stories of students selling cupcakes at their church to raise money for the fundraiser. The money started pouring into the jars that were in each classroom.
On May 13th, our fundraiser ended. Student Council officers collected the money and began counting what was in each jar. There was so much money!

On Friday, May 20th, we came together as a school community in an assembly along with Mr. and Mrs. DeFalco, Michael, and Dylan. Our Student Council officers told everyone about their fundraising journey and presented Mr. and Mrs. DeFalco with a check for Cystic Fibrosis for $3,869.09.

I was so proud to see how our students worked together to try and make a difference in the lives of those with this terrible disease. And proud of how they rallied around two students in their own school community.

Together they did so much!
