Using the Area Model to Solve Multiplication Problems

In a 4th grade math small group, we have been working on using the area model to solve multi-digit multiplication problems. Our focus has been on multiplying a three to four digit number by a one digit number. After working through many problems as a whole group, the students practiced solving problems with a partner using the Kagan structure Sage-N-Scribe.

In Sage-N-Scribe, one student is the Sage and the other student is the Scribe. The student that is the Sage explains to the Scribe how to solve the problem. In our multiplication problems, the Sage had to explain to the Scribe how to set up the area model, how to solve each multiplication problem, and then how to add the numbers together to get the final product. The Scribe wrote down the steps that the Sage was explaining. After we checked our work together, the students switched roles.

Sage-N-Scribe was an engaging way for the students to practice using the area model to solve multi-digit multiplication problems. The students were able to explain to one another how to solve a math problem, and, through these explanations, the students were able to learn from one another. Also, it is always fun to work with a partner!
