In 4th grade, students are learning about our nation's electrical system. The electrical system is essential for powering industries, homes, and critical infrastructure, playing a pivotal role in driving economic development, technological progress, and ensuring the overall functionality of our nation.
In our energy conversions unit, 4th graders take on the role of system engineers for a fictional town that experiences frequent blackouts. Their job is to determine new energy sources and energy converters for the town, using evidence to support why their choices will make the electrical system more reliable.

Over the last couple weeks, 4th graders have been engaging with digital simulations, as well as reading and writing about a system's parts and function. This week, students were introduced to their first hands-on design challenge: to design and build a wind turbine that meets certain design criteria. Each group explored given materials and designed a plan.
Once groups finished their plan, they built their turbine using a solar panel, wires, motor, and windmill. Due to the cold weather, 4th grade engineers used a LED lamp to test their wind turbines.
Each group was successful in creating their electrical systems! Next week, students will be using a paper cup and plate to create their final wind turbine. The excitement and enthusiasm students had towards their learning was infectious! These engineers have unlocked a new love towards science and discovery.
