Sage-N-Scribe & Math

In a math small group, we have been working hard on solving multi-digit subtraction problems where the larger number has one or more digits that are zero. When solving these types of subtraction problems, the students have to regroup several times. There are many steps the students take to solve the problem. One way we have been practicing these types of problems is by using the Kagan structure Sage-N-Scribe.

In Sage-N-Scribe, the students work in a partnership. One student is the Sage and the other student is the Scribe. The student that is the Sage explains to the Scribe how to solve the problem. The Sage gives the Scribe step-by-step directions on how to solve the problem. In our multi-digit subtraction problems, the Sage has to explain to the Scribe exactly where he/she needs to regroup and why. The Scribe writes down what the Sage says. If the Sage gets stuck on part of the problem, the Scribe helps coach the Sage. After we check our work together, the students switch roles.

Sage-N-Scribe is an engaging way for the students to practice their multi-digit subtraction problems. The Sages do a great job explaining what to do to solve the problem and why the steps need to be followed. The Scribes also do a nice job of attentively listening to their partner and following their directions.
