I Am...

Change Sings by Amanda Gorman, is being used in our school as a mentor text

to use for our equity standards.  It is a beautiful story about how one little girl with

a song in her heart, brings about change in her community.

After reading the book, we had the children make a circle map (very much like the

5th graders did in a previous post).  We had the children write a few positive statements

about themselves.

Then we had them walk around to their classmate's desks and fill in positive words

in the circle maps about their classmates.  When students got back to their own seats

and read the positive affirmations from others, the smiles on their faces lit up the room.

Turning to technology, the students wrote their words about themselves from their

circle map and created a Google slide.

Which we ended up printing and hanging our I Am statements in the hallway to remind us

that we can be the change with our positive attitudes!
