Goodrich Medical Students to the Rescue!

The students in my 3rd/4th grade science/social studies class have been working hard at learning about the human body systems. We started our unit by reading articles about the different systems to obtain a general understanding of the purpose of each system, and the important parts and jobs of each system. The students created human body system flip-up books to help them remember the important parts of the human body.

I learned quickly that my students needed some more hands-on, interactive learning experiences. As a culminating, end of the unit project, that students took on the role of specialty doctors. The students were proposed with this scenario.

You (the students) are attending Goodrich Medical School with Professor Wise. In medical school you have to get a background in all body systems before you can specialize as a doctor. Now that you have a general understanding of the different systems, you will be working with a team of specialty doctors to treat patients. You will receive a video (similar to Teledoc) from a patient suffering from specific symptoms, and as a team it is your job to diagnose his/her disorder. As a doctor it is important to have a good bedside manner. Therefore, listen carefully to your patient, and recommend a course of action for treatment and healing.

The team of doctors did a lot of research to diagnose their patients' disorders. They created a video for their patients sharing the diagnosis and treatment plans. They also gave their patient an overview of how their affected body system should be working.

Overall, the students were engaged and excited to share their work with you!
