Drop
Everything and Read
I was talking
with a student’s parents about their child and if she was reading at home. Mom
said that reading at home has always been a struggle. Their daughter never wanted to read. She was just not interested. At
the first parent teacher conference we gave suggestions to get her to do more
reading at home. Mom and Dad were not
going to give up. They tried prizes,
money, and extra computer time. None of
those incentives seemed to be working. Finally they decided to drop everything and
read every night for 15 minutes. Dad
closes his laptop; Mom shuts off the TV, even older high school sister stops using her
phone for 15 minutes every night!
Everyone takes time to read. Mom
reports that she is enjoying that family time together and wants to read
more. At school she is reading more and
taking more risks with her reading. She
is no longer afraid to make mistakes. She has definitely improved her reading skills.
Success! Do the Drop Everything and Read Challenge. Turn off all electronics for 15 minutes every night and
spend time reading together as a family.
