Taking it from the Lego movie – “Everything is Awesome, Everything
is cool when you’re part of a team!” Team building has been part of our
beginning of the year activities in second grade. From our teams trying to keep
their balloons afloat while holding hands
to clapping our friends names as part of our fluency practice
to inside/outside circles that help us discover things that
are the same between us and things that are different
we have been having fun
while building community. As we move through week two of our new school year,
we are focused on forming a reading community (“A community of readers is a group of people who share the common goal
of reading and discussing literature and becoming literate human beings. This
community is built upon mutual respect and a willingness to listen to and consider
the merits of each member’s ideas and interpretations.” – Frank Serafini, Around the Reading
Workshop in 180 Days). As we launch into our new SchoolWide reading curriculum,
we are engaged in a three part lesson of interactive read-alouds, building
stamina during our independent reading time, and sharing our reading successes.
Independent reading time enables us to conference with individual students and
meet with groups to provide support. Thus, everything is AWESOME so far in
second grade. We look forward to a year of fun, teamwork, community, and
growth!
